Is It Possible To Change The System While Working Within It? One Grassroots Group Is Trying To Do Just That

Political participation has become all-consuming. Even if one tries to hold to the maxim, “Never discuss politics or religion in polite company,” it is impossible not to be caught in a discussion on the topic. Politics may always have been part of America’s civil religion, yet now it is also our reality entertainment. Whether one watches the news or prime time television, listens to podcasts or the radio, politics is the only thing anyone is talking about.

What were once at least blurred lines have also been lost. For example, local politics now has national implications and exposure. While in the past mayors of major U.S. cities have run for national positions, such as president of the United States, now former presidential candidates, like Andrew Yang, are running in mayoral races. Moreover, the politics of even smaller cities are becoming part of the national conversation.

Similarly, the lines between anomic participation, grassroots organizing, and party politics are no longer clear. Assembling, with and without proper permits, is praised and castigated simultaneously, depending on who is assembling and who is commenting on its purpose. Social media has become an official channel for government employees and individual influencers to speak to constituents. Democratic and Republican candidates and party leaders are becoming very savvy at using social ire and activism to push their greater party agenda.

The benefits of increased political participation is that there are more and more diverse voices entering the public conversation. It has become easier to speak out and get engaged. This is a good thing for democracy, since enfranchisement, in all of its capacities, increases legitimacy of democratic processes. The risk is not in having so many options available for political participation. Rather, it is when those options delegitimize the system as opposed to reinforce it.
