Apple Reveals Stunning Upgrade For iPads, iPhones, MacBooks

iPhones keep getting more expensive: look closely and the iPhone 12 costs $170 more than the iPhone 11. But if you have considered ditching your iPhone for a cheaper handset, Apple just revealed a great reason to stick with the brand.

Spotted by AppleInsider, Apple has revealed it is working on technology that would allow iPhones to wireless charge from an iPad, MacBook or Mac. And, digging deeper, it looks like a game changer.

In a patent titled ‘Inductive charging between electronic devices’ and granted by the US Patent and Trademark Office today, Apple shows how the installation of an inductive coil into a laptop or iPad can magnetically connect an iPhone and charge it. Apple shows various setups, with the coil located everywhere from the bottom of a laptop to under the front display of an iPad (image below). The latter is obviously unlikely, but the point of a patent is to cover all bases.

Moreover, the potential here is huge because Apple’s new M1 MacBooks already have jaw dropping battery life (up to 20h), leaving them with charge to spare. In future, this means an owner could set off for a weekend with no cables at all, just their MacBook and iPhone. And all rivals can offer right now is borderline laughable.

That said, the lockin is undeniable: Apple’s proprietary silicon combined with its proprietary MagSafe charging system. So if you thought you could ditch your iPhone, think again.

The flipside is a patent neither provides a clear timescale to market nor a guarantee that it will even make it there. But this is different to most patents. The core ingredients are already in place, a big MacBook refresh is expected this year and the (now-public) patent shows it was originally filed back on August 30, 2019. So Apple has been working on this for a while.

As such, if your 2021 resolutions included a plan to ditch your iPhone, you might want to rethink those plans for now.
